Abstract

Among the different available heat sources to control and maintain within restricted limits tundish temperature, plasma torch system would appear to be the most promising proposition, since it permits to delivery of large amounts of clean high-temperature energy. During 1989 CSM installed a prototype heating system on the continuous casting machine for blooms at Aosta Cogne steelworks (9 t tundish). The technical feasibility of using a plasma source as heating system was investigated. During this project the heating system has been much improved. The control system has been upgraded for the purpose of introducing automatic operation. In order to calibrate the control logic, simulation tests and about 30 heating trials have been carried out. A mathematical model of steel fluid dynamics in the tundish was analysed to optimize the heating effect of the plasma torch system.
