Abstract

The single tuyère rig previously used for coal injection studies was modified in order to investigate the changes in raceway size, shape and action occurring with high levels of coal injection. A series of trials were carried out with granular and PF grade low volatile (LV) and high volatile (HV) coals at a replacement level of 50% of the coke consumed at the tuyère with 5% oxygen enrichment. A method of injecting mullite holospheres into the raceway in order to produce frozen, raceways was developed. The differences in raceway shape with LV and HV coal injection were determined and were related to the increase in blast volume/kinetic energy with coal injection. Sectioning of the structures gave further information about gas flow and coke movement patterns within the raceway.
