Abstract

Resonant destabilization of Alfvén waves by fusion produced alpha-particles is an important issue for thermonuclear reactors. The modifications caused by kinetic effects have here been studied in the toroidal Alfvén eigenmode (TAE) range of frequencies. Groups of kinetic modes (KAE) appear inside and above the toroidicity gap; some are weakly damped and have a broad radial extension that may induce substantial alpha-losses. Such spectra with groups of weakly damped modes have recently been observed in the Joint European Torus (JET).
