Abstract

In this study the improvement of the pilot inspection system for surface inspection of strips designed and constructed by CSM has been accomplished in order to realise the prototype of the industrial system. Modifications to hardware, software and mechanical structure were made. The distributed structure of the system has been connected by standard Ethernet local area network (LAN) achieving fast and reliable transfers among the various central processing units (CPUs). Multi-processing on different CPUs has been introduced to improve the overall performance of the elaboration and application handling software. A powerful operator interface has been added with further off-line processing capabilities such as hardware simulation, database management and printouts. A new lighting device based on aperture fluorescent tube was designed and constructed together with sensitive alignment mechanics for the camera. Proper housing of electronics and mechanical components, compliant with IP 55 standard, was realised in order to achieve an effective protection for plant installation.
