A methodology for mapping the forested areas of Europe at an approximate scale of 1:2 million using low spatial resolution satellite data has been developed. This document describes and demonstrates the methodology which is intended to be operational and to provide a mechanism for unified European forest area mapping that may be repeated on an annual to decadal basis. Recommendations for improvements to the methodology and the suitability of the next generation of remote sensing satellites for European forest mapping are described.
