The rapid detection of actinides in low level samples
The demand for measurements of actinides in environmental samples is permanently increasing, both from the radiation protection and from the safeguards community. Whilst the former mainly directs its concerns towards health hazards caused by incorporation of radiopollutants from the environment or the food chain, the latter is mainly interested in the function of radionuclides, and actinides in particular, as an indicator of undeclared nuclear activities. The aim of this work was to develop a rapid and simple method for actinide analysis with a method based on extraction chromatography. Tracer experiments to separate U, Th, Pu, Am and Cm were performed to test and improve the method for the modern analytical needs of environmental radioactivity determination.
