Abstract

Nondestructive examination (NDE) during fabrication, pre-service inspection (PSI) and In Service Inspection (ISI) are considered key issues for the safe use of nuclear energy. In addition, they are an important element of plant lifetime management, which is today a critical item in the decision process on nuclear policies. NDE is affected by several factors:

- The components to be inspected (including the effect of material, geometry, access conditions, etc);
- The reliability and the effectiveness of the techniques, equipment and procedures as applied, and their qualification;
- The human factors and thus the personnel training and qualification process.
