As a result of the programme for the inspection of steel components (PISC) and of other exercises conducted in the United States and Europe, the concept of nondestructive evaluation (NDE) performance demonstration was developed which tends to replace prescriptive standards by performance standards in view of an effective setting of performance of the NDE techniques in their application, of more open competition and of easier introduction of new technologies. The European network for the qualification of inspection procedures (ENIQ) based on NDE techniques and organized along the lines of the PISC scheme, has developed a European methodology for inspection performance demonstration now called qualification. This methodology is progressively used as a guide in several EU countries for the development of qualification procedures of the in-service inspection (ISI) systems. The know-how developed by PISC for assemblies fabrication, defects implanting, NDE results evaluation, etc is a basis of the inspection qualification procedures.
