Abstract

The Praclay (preliminary demonstration test for disposal of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) in clay) project aims at a preliminary demonstration of the feasibility of the HLW disposal concept developed within the scope of the Belgian programme. Before performing the actual demonstration test in the extended underground research facility, it was necessary to carry out a preliminary mock-up test on the surface. The backfill material was selected after extensive laboratory test campaign and appropriate mathematical modelling. The material chosen consists of 60 % FoCa clay, 35 % sand and 5 % graphite compacted in blocks. The report presents an overview of the Praclay experimental programme. It describes the main results of the characterization of the backfill material and summarizes the work that has been carried out to prepare the mock-up test. Finally, continuation of the Praclay research programme, which is scheduled to last up to 2009, is presented.
