Abstract

The radioisotopic inventory of radioactive waste containers has to be specified prior to disposal in a repository. A tomography assay system has been built to analyse low-level waste contained in 200 litre drums with a maximum surface dose rate of 2 mSv/h. The assay system uses combined transmission and emission tomography techniques. The design of the system incorporates translation-rotational movement to enable the examination of different horizontal cross-sections of the drum. There are four major radiometric techniques installed:

- Fast gamma scanning (GS);
- Digital radiography (DR);
- Transmission computerized tomography (TCT);
- Emission computerized tomography (ECT).
