Abstract

The ultra-clean chemical laboratory (UCCL) has been built at the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM) to allow reliable, contamination-free chemical treatment of samples prior to inorganic elemental or isotopic analysis. The concept is to guarantee a dust-free environment combined with materials which are resistant to corrosion (plastic) even if mixtures of concentrated acids are continuously used. Thus not only a clean and dust-free room (an air class quality better than 10, using the United States Federal Standard definition, is obtained on the workplaces), but also a clean laboratory has been established for trace and isotopic analysis.
