Abstract

Pinonaldehyde, nopinone, 3-isopropenyl-6-oxo-heptanal and 5-methyl-5-vinyl-tetrahydro-furan-2-ol are intermediates in the tropospheric oxidation of alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, limonene and linalool, respectively. The reactions of these terpene oxidation products with OH, NO(3) and O(3) have been studied by long path Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The reaction rate constants, k, for all of the reactions have been determined at 740 Torr ± 5 Torr and 298 K ± 5K, and a number of reaction products were identified. The rate constants obtained for the reactions with pinonaldehyde were: K(OH) = (9.1 ± 1.8) E-11, K(NO3) = (5.4 ± 1.8) E-14, K(O3) = (8.9 ± 1.4) E-20. For the reactions with nopinone: K(OH) = (1.7 ± 0.2) E-11, K(NO3) = (1.1 ± 0.3) E-15, K(03) <5E-21, for the reactions with 3-isopropenyl-6-oxo-heptanal: K(OH) = (1.1 ± 0.3) E-10, K(NO3) = (2.6 ± 0.8) E-13, K(03) = (8.3 ± 2.2) E-18 and for the reactions with 5-methyl-5-vinyl-tetrahydro-furan-2-ol: K(OH) = (7.4 ± 0.9) E-11, K(NO3) = (2.0 ± 0.9) E-14, K(03) = (3.8 ± 0.8) E-18 (all units are in cm{3} molecule {-1}s{-1} and uncertainties are given with two sigma).
