Abstract

The aim of this project is to improve the machinability of engineering steels by the addition of bismuth. The reason for using this element is the similarity between its chemical and physical properties and those of lead and, as the machinability increasing effect of Bi is stronger, the necessary addition of this element is lower. In this way, the detrimental effects (on hot ductility, cold formability and fatigue) caused by the addition of an element with a low melting point will be reduced.
