  • Improvement of cast steel cleanliness by optimization of the flow conditions in the multiphase system melt/gas bubbles/slag/deoxidation products in the ladle and continuous casting tundish

Abstract

When process technology and secondary metallurgy techniques are applied to ladles and tundishes the result is a multi-phase system of melt/gas bubbles/slag/deoxidation products. In order to obtain detailed information on these relationships in the above described multi-phase system, this research project first ran a series of tests on down scaled models of ladle and tundish, as well as performing numerical computations. In the tests on the ladle models, a Phase-Doppler-Anemometer was successfully employed for the first time to perform time dependent measurements of the local concentration and size distribution of inclusions. By numerical computations also the influence of the flow characteristics on the movement of inclusions had been investigated.
