The PHEBUS FP experiments and related EU-sponsored research activities on severe accidents
The International PHEBUS Fission Products (FP) Programme is presently the largest integral research programme on severe accident. It aims at studying phenomena linked to the release of fission products from a degrading reactor core as well as their behaviour along the release path and in the reactor containment. The first two PHEBUS experiments carried out to date have shown a number of unexpected phenomena like low temperature core dislocation, multi-component aerosols, low circuit aerosol retention, but high containment wall deposits, gaseous iodine at the containment inlet, the absence of a radiolytical iodine emanation.
