Abstract

The main objective of the work has been to determine the thermomechanical processing conditions and steel compositions suitable for producing as-rolled bars made of:

- V microalloyed steels with acceptable strength and toughness levels;
- Low alloy steels, for quenching and tempering or case hardening, which do not require long spheroidizing annealing treatments.

Laboratory and industrial steels have been subjected to a range of hot deformation and controlled cooling conditions. Industrial trials have been carried out at the Piombino's bar mill to investigate the effect of rolling speed and temperatures on austenitic grain refinement. Moreover, thermomechanical and microstructural models have been optimized and validated for a bar mill in order to predict the austenite evolution during hot rolling and controlled cooling. ing.
