Abstract

The refinement limits of austenitic grains and final microstructure were determined for microalloyed steels with low and medium carbon content, hot rolled at high temperatures. Refinement was achieved acting on the static (SRX) and dynamic (DRX) recrystallization processes of austenite, the inhibition of grain growth through fine precipitation, the introduction of in-line heat treatments such as normalizing and accelerated cooling. SRX and DRX behaviour of microalloyed steels was reviewed. Mathematical models for the prediction of the austenite evolution during hot rolling, already available, were specialized using this information and the experimental procedure was designed. Reference C-Mn steels and steels with single or combined microadditions (V, Nb, Ti) were selected.
