Abstract

This report contains a comprehensive review aimed at defining the optimum physical and interfacial conditions required to maximize inclusion removal from steel using either filtration or bubble flotation. Complementary physical, mathematical and hot modelling studies of the bubble flotation of inclusions have been carried out to help define optimum bubble volumes required for maximizing particle lift towards the slag/metal interface. Contact angle and surface tension measurements on four steels of differing chemical composition have been made from which the possibility of the flotation by gas bubbles of different inclusions has been assessed.
