5th European fusion physics workshop: Summary of session III on neoclassical modes
This report presents a summary of the session on neoclassical modes, part of the 5th European Fusion Physics Workshop held in Sesimbra, Portugal, 10-12 december 1997. The session on neoclassical modes was mainly motivated by the prediction that these modes might be critical in determining the achievable beta in ITER: some observations recently made in various tokamaks indicate that conventional (as opposed to advanced) long-pulse (ie flat-top duration longer that about 10 confinement times) discharges could experience a beta limit significantly below the empirical Troyon limit.
