A workshop entitled Sea-Air Exchange Processes and Modelling was held at the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU) in Kjeller, Norway from 11-13 June, 1997. The main goals of the workshop were to:

- Review available information on physical, chemical, biological, and meteorological processes and mechanisms resulting in cycling of nutrients and pollutants between the sea and the atmosphere;
- Enhance understanding of the impact of sea-air exchange processes on the productivity in the sea;
-Outline research needs at a European level on the basis of the above information.

Focus was placed on the definition of tools, such as models to describe the cycling of selected nutrients, trace metals, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and trace gases between the air and the sea. The focus was more on processes in the open sea than on the coastal areas. reas.
