Observation of magnetism at the surface with synchrotron X-rays
Synchrotron radiation has already had an appreciable impact on studies of magnetism, from circular dichroism to magnetic extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and resonant magnetic scattering in order to examine magnetic structures; and now comes a new aspect: using resonant X-ray scattering for the studies of surface magnetism. Two papers published simultaneously in Physical Review Letters (22 July 1996) reported early measurements in what will certainly be a growth area for the new high-intensity 3rd generation machines.
