During the last two and a half decades IRMM and the Standards, Measurement and Testing Program have been very busy with the preparation and distribution of certified BCR reference materials. For the production of reference materials new methods and quality criteria have been developed, which significantly influenced and still influence international guidelines in the field of reference materials. The guidelines are subject of steady changes since the production criteria have to be adapted to the properties of materials of which the production becomes more and more difficult and because statistical models are changed due to new knowledge or interpretation. The article gives an overview on the activities of IRMM and the Standards, Measurement and Testing Program and addresses the current guidelines for the production of BCR reference materials as well as the need to use certified reference materials. Finally some statistical aspects concerning the use of reference materials will be discussed and brief reference will be made to new statistical models.
