Abstract

During the recent years, there has been an increasing number of applications of hot rolled sheets for deep drawing operations. Nevertheless, because of the galling phenomena which occur when very difficult parts are drawn, the development of these products is still restrained. It is therefore the aim of this research to study the relationship between galling and surface parameters for those products. The investigation has been carried out with two representative grades of deep drawing quality steels: the 3C high-formability grade and the BS2 grade for gas cylinders. For each grade, strip has been produced by hot rolling and pickling on industrial lines. Two types of surface finish are compared: the current finish (BR04) obtained by rolling the as-rolled strip with smooth rolls at the entrance of pickling line and the antigalling finish (GR09) obtained by using shot blasted rolls before pickling.
