The Indonesian forest fires
A brief note at the beginning of October reported on the uncontrolled, deliberately set, forest fires in Indonesia. Here the evaluation is brought some steps further, by pointing at some basic characteristics of the SE Asian forestry sector, which for a long time has been the leading and dominating economic sector in the region. The current note explains the deliberate use of fire in wood production, and evaluates the costs (short term and long term) due to the recent fires.
