Abstract

The main aim of this workshop was to provide a forum to discuss the ways in which remote sensing and geographical information system (GIS) techniques could provide tools for contributing to the regular collection of statistical and geo-referenced information on forest resources for the Pan-European area. The main objectives of the workshop were:

- To provide an overview of the 'state of the art' in forestry and remote sensing and GIS;
- To review the utility of remote sensing in European forestry;
- To discuss ways of assessing the accuracy and reliability of forest maps and forest data derived from remote sensing;
- To assess ways of optimizing forest inventories using remote sensing.
