Implementation of a 3D coupled spectral element/finite element solver for wave propagation and soil-structure interaction simulations

This document is Part II (numerical examples) of the companion report (EUR 17730), which describes the implementation of AHNSE (advanced hybrid numerical solver for elastodynamics), performed in the framework of the TRISEE joint European project. One of the major goals of TRISEE is to improve the capabilities of numerically simulating ground vibrations and their effects on structures of engineering interest, in the presence of significant site effects. The AHNSE software has been based upon two pre-existing computer programs: the Finite Element code PLEXIS-3C and the Spectral Element code ELSE. The present document contains a series of validation examples which illustrate the correctness of the implementations in AHNSE through comparisons with analytical solutions and with ELSE numerical results, on purely linear problems solved by the spectral method. Then, several further examples of coupled, hybrid solutions to more complex and realistic applications are given.
