In the current context of global climate change, nuclear power remains the only large-scale means of generating electricity without adding to the problem. The probability of a severe accident occurring in the West is extremely low, however helping to ensure safe power generation has always been one of the European Union's research priorities. In this context, the second international symposium on EU Research on Severe Accidents was held in Luxembourg from 17 to 19 November 1997, as a mid-term review of the RTD contracts launched in 1996 and 1997 in the area of light water reactor (LWR) safety. These are the proceedings of the symposium.
