Abstract

Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is the elemental analysis instrumental technique of the last decade. Today the volume of literature which has been created since ICP-MS began is enormous, and there is a need for the development of a synthesis to evaluate the possibilities of this multielemental trace analytical technique, showing its current potential and limitations and opening roads for future research and development (R&D) work in the area. This synthesis includes four main points:

- A description of the ICP-MS system;
- An evaluation of the analytical demand from the steel industry;
- A survey on research and technological development (RTD) activities;
- The most relevant ICP-MS bibliography (1992-97).

A technical annex is included describing in detail the RTD activities carried out within the European Community. As demonstrated by the work and the results presented in this document, the overall balance of the different activities carried out to date at European coal and steel community (ECSC) level has been highly positive, and provides encouragement for the launching of new research programmes in the field of ICP-MS.
