External kink stability in quasi-axisymmetric stellarators
Quasi-axisymmetric stellarators (QAS) offer great potential for magnetic fusion reactors with high beta, steady state operation and good confinement. One of key issues for QAS is the stability of external kink mode driven by pressure-induced bootstrap current. Recently, high-beta ballooning-stable QAS have been obtained by adding appropriate three dimensional modification to the plasma boundary of an optimized tokamak equilibrium. In this work, the stability of low-n external kink modes in QAS is assessed using a 3D free boundary magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability code Terpsichore.
