This report contains the results of the research activities carried out by the Italian group within the collective programme on the fatigue strength of steel bridges. The research undertaken completed the information obtained during the third phase on the fatigue strength of orthotropic steel bridge decks (especially the connections between longitudinal stiffeners and transverse beams) and the development of repair techniques for fatigue-cracked or damaged stiffener-to-stiffener connections and stiffener-to-transverse beam connections. Concerning stiffener-to-stiffener connections, two kinds of repair techniques, are proposed. The repair technique proposed for stiffener-to-transverse beam connections consists of grinding and re-welding the cracks. In order to define their fatigue strength, real scale specimens of repaired stiffener-to-stiffener connections and of virgin and repaired stiffener-to-transverse beam connections have been tested under constant amplitude fatigue loads. A wide parametric study has been performed in order to compare the stress patterns at the free edge in eleven different shapes of cut outs in the stiffener-to-transverse beam connections. An experimental investigation of the distribution and magnitude of residual stresses in stiffener-to-stiffener longitudinal connections has been performed too. An overall synthesis concludes the research activity.
