Abstract

The aim is to achieve a better understanding of, and to produce a model of, the working and fatigue resistance of metallic elements of road bridges. These results should lead to a clearer appreciation of the safety of structures in relation to risk of collapse due to fatigue.

This report describes research carried out by IRSID and LCPC on the behaviour of a construction detail of a mixed bridge under fatigue conditions: the liaison between a running vertical strengthening beam and the lower flange of a master beam. In order to carry out this research an actual construction, the Jargeau bridge over the Loire, was fitted with instruments to determine the nature and the size of the constraints field adjoining the zone being studied, and then to calculate the histograms of rainflow constraints, using the Castor-LCPC programme. .
