Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The Centre for Earth Observation's (CEO) on-line information system Enabling Services (ES) forms an important component of the CEO programme with the aim of increasing the exchange and accessibility of meta-data and information on Earth observation. The ES system architecture comprises 7 subsystems and the ES search servers subsystem is the major subsystem providing remote search capabilities using interoperable search and retrieval protocols. CEO has selected the z39.50 protocol using the catalogue interoperability protocol (CIP), WAIS and GILS profiles as the mechanism by which data and document information can be searched and retrieved from remote providers. This paper presents the ES search subsystem features and architecture with emphasis on the issues of interoperability and on-line connection of providers.
