In this work, a device is presented for early warning detection of runaway initiation, using phase space time-delay embedding reconstruction techniques. Firstly, an early warning on-line criterion for runaway detection is discussed. This criterion, based on an invariant property under phase space reconstruction, is compared with previous ones. Secondly, the on-line application of such a criterion is shown. As can be seen, the application of chaos theory techniques to early warning detection of runaway initiation opens a new route, in between the simple use of measured variables and the complex model-based techniques using adaptive filters, to assess hazardous situations in chemical reactors.
