Electronic structure of self-organized lateral superlattices on a metal surface: O/Cu(110)
Self-organized formation of quasi-one-dimensional surface oxide domains on Cu(110) leads to a one-dimensional confinement of a Shockley surface state. High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectra show the appearance of singularities in the density of states expected for the critical points of quasi-one-dimensional subbands. At higher oxygen coverages disorder decouples the individual domains (Anderson localization) and a pronounced quantum size shift of the resulting quantum well states is observed.
