Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The support group for agrometeorology (SUGRAM) of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Union (EU) was established in 1990 by the JRC Space Applications Institute (SAI) in the context of the project for monitoring agriculture by remote sensing (MARS). The general objective of the group is the provision of expertise in the field of agrometeorological aspects of modelling techniques to monitor, assess and forecast the state and the yield of major crops in the countries of the EU. In the course of the five years, further immediate objectives were defined as follows:

- Validation of model outputs using existing data sets;
- More complete integration of information on soils, available water capacity and agrometeorological model outputs;
- Integration of remotely sensed and model output information;
- Continuous improvement of the crop models through incorporation of new or improved modules;
- Geographical extension of the use of the techniques (eg in Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean areas).

Following the discussion of specific points during the meetings of the group, members undertook to elaborate on the points raised and to present material for discussion during the next meeting. This document is based, to a large extent, on such material and the discussion that followed its presentation. References are given at the end of each contribution. bution.
