Measurement of light absorption by aquatic particles retained on filters: Determination of the optical pathlength amplification by the transmittance-reflectance method
The optical pathlength amplification (beta factor), induced by multiple scattering in quartz filters used for light absorption measurements of aquatic particles, has been measured by the transmittance-reflectance (T-R) method, for algal species with cell diameter in the range from 1 to 5 microns. An experimental test has verified that the beta factor expression derived from measurements carried out by the T-R method on a algal culture, is also applicable to detrital particles.
