This work covers the essential elements of the discussions which took place during the conference entitled Science, philosophy and the history of science in Europe, held in Paris on 9th and 10th December 1994, under the direction of Dominique Lecourt, President of the Diderot Association.

During these two days, approximately sixty academics and scientists from throughout the world (Europe, North and South America, Japan, North Africa and Africa) and representing various disciplines (including among others: medicine, physics, chemistry, geography, social sciences, mathematics) discussed the role of philosophy and ethics in the history and in the present-day teaching of science in Europe. The present work is a transcript of thirty of the presentations at the conference, edited by their authors. .
