Abstract

The aim of this research project is to cut down the production costs of cold formed high strength (1000 MPa) components, through the development of a low cost, low carbon, low alloyed steel that can be direct-quenched during wire rod rolling to obtain ductile acicular structures able to be cold formed by conventional processes in order to obtain grade 10.9 bolts and fasteners without final heat treatment. In order to reach this final objective several combinations of alloy elements were tested (Mn, Cr, Mo, B, Ti, Nb).
