Abstract

High frequency - direct current (HF-DC) systems have been developed which allow the use of smaller, lighter welding transformers. Lighter weight welding guns allow the use of smaller robots when welding the thinner sheet steels, thereby enabling considerable cost savings to be made in terms of capital investment. Alternatively because of the lighter overall construction, then transformers of larger capacity are feasible for the same overall weight of conventional 50Hz current transformers. The purpose of the present research programme is to assess available systems in order to define the optimum electrical characteristics which significantly influence weld quality and the choice of equipment for a particular application. In addition, operating procedures for HF-DC, direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) systems are compared and general aspects of weldability and weld formation determined for a variety of zinc coated steels.
