Abstract

The aim of this project was to develop a strategy allowing better control of strip width in a hot wide strip mill by using increased strip tensions between two successive finishing stands. This project proved that width reduction in the interstand length of a hot strip finishing mill is a stable, controllable and reproducible process which allows a width control facility to be implemented without many problems. Some strategies for the control unit were developed. During the project period, a rolling test computer system and width measurement equipment were developed for measuring the strip width between two successive stands. The control strategy was based on a feed-forward control and a monitoring system. During the examinations on strip width reduction by increased longitudinal strip tensions, the influence of the strip tensions on shape and flatness of the strips was analysed.
