This paper addresses a number of physics issues for which the study of the influence of plasma shape is important. The first issue treats the influence of shape on global energy confinement, for which the present database is rather sparse, comprising mainly extrapolations of results from different machines. As a second topic, the ohmic H-mode, which has been achieved in virtually all configurations in TCV will be presented. A phenomenological description of the H-mode is given, and the impact of edge localized modes (ELMs) on the global confinement in many configuration is discussed. Lastly the present TCV operational domain is explored, describing results of measurements and modelling of the vertical instability growth rate in several configurations.
