Abstract

On May 8, 1998, Dr. E. Hameiri (Courant Institute) kindly drew attention to an error in the analyses presented in the above report. Upon rectifying this error, it is found that both the Laplace transform and Case- Van Kampen (CVKM) methods of analysing the spectrum imply that the magnetosonic singularities of the system which were discussed are removable. The analyses show explicitly that the resolvent of the system is analytic for the frequency ranges w(2)(f,s). This result proves unambiguously that the principal claim of the paper, namely that ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) has two CVKM (ie magnetosonic) continua in addition to the previously known shear Alfvén and acoustic ones, is invalid. It is now in full agreement with the conclusions of Appert et al and Goedbloed cited in the work and also with the paper by Hameiri.
