Abstract

This report describes the preparation of two lyophilized mussel reference materials and the certification of the mass fractions of saxitoxin and dc-saxitoxin in these materials. Saxitoxin and dc-saxitoxin belong to the group of the paralytic shellfish poisons (PSP). In addition information is given about the preparation of a saxitoxin enrichment solution (CRM 663) to be used with the blank reference material (CRM 542) so as to obtain a reference material positive for saxitoxin. Tables provide the certified (and information) values together with their uncertainties. CRM 542 also contains other toxins of the group of PSP. Qualitative information about gonyautoxins 2, 3 and 5, as obtained from the interlaboratory studies on the basis of different criteria and information values are given. The certification study for CRM 542 and CRM 543 was carried out by 13 laboratories using a variety of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) methods involving precolumn and postcolumn derivatization.
