Rail straightening has been achieved industrially using rollers. However, some quality problems occur:

-The extremities of the bars are not straightened;
- Undulations appear in the centre of the bars;
- The dimensions of the rails are changed;
- Residual stresses are introduced in the rails.

Straightening by traction avoids all these problems. It has been shown that:

- Traction reduces residual stresses for rails which have been cooled or roller straightened;
- The straightness obtained conforms to present standards;
- The tension must be applied without any flexion.
