Abstract

The aim of the source reduction by European testing schedules project (SRETS) is to gather data from a number of sources and a wide range of packed products being transported throughout Europe. The collected data will form the basis for setting up state-of-the-art in Europe for test methods and test schedules of packages and products. Selected measured data are the basis for vibration analyses and simulation in the packaging laboratory, as well as complete testing schedules for different distribution chains and even the use of products during their life-cycle. This pre-normative project will also result in a method for random vibration testing and testing schedules on packages. The method will be submitted to CEN. The SRETS project consists of seven tasks, and this document is the final report on the first, identification of damage inducing mechanisms. A description is given of the main mechanisms likely to induce damage to packaged items and packaging, originating from different transportation conditions. This area of work is required to ensure that all probable failure and damage inducing mechanisms are addressed in a logical manner.
