Abstract

In 1995, Lombardy Region Council entrusted JRC Ispra Environmental Institute to conduct research aimed at estimating the polluting load generated in the catchment area of Lake Iseo. The principal interest was in assessing the current and actual environmental condition.

The limnological investigation proves that the lake cannot be considered a full mixed reactor, and that its waters are characterised by double stratification. Full water mixing is observed at 80 m depth (mixolimnion). The average water residence time in the mixolimnion corresponds to approximately 2.8 years and in the whole lake to approximately 18 years. In the past twenty years the trophic condition of Lake Iseo has evolved negatively. The present situation confirms that the lake now belongs to the eutrophic category; the average concentration of phosphorus is estimated to be around 55 mg/m(3).

With a view to reducing the external load of phosphorus, the Evola box modelling framework offers the opportunity to estimate the growth of phosphorus concentration within the context of lake evolution. The expectation is that the Evola models should contribute to the revision of the final objective for the improvement of the Sebino (corresponding to approximately 72 t P/year), reachable in about 5 to 10 years. rs.
