Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

As part of the preparation for a dependability initiative within the 5th framework information society technologies programme, a workshop was held in Brussels on 17th March 1998. Ten participants representing diverse European organizations attended the workshop to present their dependability concerns from an embedded systems perspective. The workshop consisted of 8 presentations covering automotive, medical devices, smartcards, microelectronics, process and systems automation, certification, and general electronics applications. The presentations were followed by discussions on the drivers shaping the embedded systems landscape, the dependability challenges faced by industry, society and research, and the potential needs for and benefits from a European dependability initiative. The discussion on the dependability initiative reflected the new challenges that the European industry has to face due to the accelerated evolution of technology, the stringent demands of society, and the globalization of markets. The envisioned benefits of a European dependability initiative for information society technologies are:

- Wealth/employment creation;
- Enhancement of safety, security and quality of services;

The associated main needs for that initiative are to:

- Target technologies for the emerging embedded information technology applications;
- Fulfil the industrial needs related to legal issues and de-facto standards;
- Foster research and development;
- Favour an appropriate training of human resources.
