Abstract

The second call for proposals under the Commission's industrial and materials technologies programme (Brite-Euram III) was opened on 15th December 1995. This call covered the whole work programme except sub area 3A: Aeronautics technologies. This publication provides information the 242 projects (including the reserve listed projects) recommended by external evaluators and financed by the Commission with a total budget of 400 MECU, matched by a similar amount from industry.

The projects selected covered industrial research (IR) (200 projects) and basic research projects (BR) (42 projects). IR requires a higher participation from industry and is typified by large consortia. BR requires longer term, smaller projects in which most of the research activity is undertaken at academic establishments or research centres, with the active steering and participation of industry also, but at a lower level. Under this second call, both types of proposal showed comparable quality with regard to the first call for proposals. Those recommended covered all areas and priority themes of the programme, apart from aeronautics, with an important emphasis in area 1.1: Incorporation of new technologies into production systems and area 2.2: Materials engineering. .
