Near liquidus casting aims to improve steel internal quality by removal of some of its superheat by means of a heat exchanger between the tundish and casting mould. Earlier studies showed that such material exhibited a finer as cast structure with reduced central segregation. The aim of this project was to develop equipment for single strand production trials at British Steel's Teesside and Scunthorpe works. Pilot plant studies helped to define criteria. Finite element modelling confirmed that thermally induced stresses in the heat exchanger would be acceptable and a full hazard and operability study was undertaken. After commissioning, plant trials were carried out.
