Electrical conductivity of silicon carbide composites
The electrical conductivity was measured on two SiC/SiC composite materials in the temperature range from room temperature up to 1000 C in order to estimate the magnitude of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effects in liquid metal blankets if SiC/SiC composites are used as structural materials. For both types of material, the electrical conductivity increased continuously with temperature. The conductivity values ranged from 350 ohms/m at room temperature to 500 ohms/m at 1000 C, indicating that the materials tested cannot be treated as an electrical insulator in a MHD analysis for liquid metal blanket studies.
